Today Marks 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legendary Speech

Martin Luther King Jr., the famed American activist, Baptist minister and leading figure in the African-American Civil Rights Movement, delivered one of the most iconic speeches in the U.S. history.

MLKMLK Jr. Day in 2014, which falls on Monday, January 20, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, on which occasion Martin Luther King Jr. delivered “I have a dream” speech, which led him to a position as legendary as Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner took his movement beyond racial inequality to poverty as well as the Vietnam War.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a national holiday in 1986, 18 years after his assassination.
