Grand Opening for Jackson Street Commons Set for May 22

In the 2013 Point in Time homeless count, veterans accounted for 114 people living without a shelter. In Howard County, temporary shelters are a short-term solution to this issue, but soon disabled servicemen and women will be able to call The Jackson Street Commons their home,” said Teri Rose, the veterans advocate for the Family Service Association of Howard County. “This is only the third of its kind in Indiana because it’s permanent housing, not only a temporary solution.

Jackson Street CommonsThe shelter will include:

  • 27 individual apartments
  • Common kitchen
  • Laundry room
  • Coffee bar
  • Communal living areas
  • Supportive service suites
  • Food pantry
  • Reception area
  • Project managers area
  • Library with computers and books
  • Laundry room
  • Elevator
  • Outdoor social area

Last year over 114 veterans were reported to be homeless in our area alone. For this reason, Family Service Association will be building a 27 unit apartment complex to serve Homeless Veterans. The project called “Jackson Street Commons” will provide permanent homes for our military veterans that have sacrificed for all of us. Jackson Street Commons is being built on Jackson Street near Apperson Way, the project is scheduled to open in February 2014. Applications for residents who are honorably discharged, disabled, homeless veterans will begin in October.

This project will use the “Housing First” model which has had tremendous success around the country. This model will provide a home and surround the veterans with services that will help them recover and become self sufficient.

This project will cost approximately 3.3 million dollars. They have partnered with the City of Kokomo, the County Commissioners, St. Joseph Hospital, and several others and have over 2.8 million dollars already committed. They are looking for partners to help raise the rest of the funds. They hope you will consider partnering with them on this great project that will serve and give back to those who have served us.

If you are interested in partnering with them or would like more information, please contact Judy Dennis or Teri Rose at 765.457.9313. You may also click the links below for a list of opportunities.
